A personal, pro bono project, the Library Café was the brainchild of Amin Sheikh, a friend of Russian For Fish founder Pereen d’Avoine. Having grown up in Mumbai, raised by Sneha Sadan – a Jesuit-run initiative providing for the city’s homeless children – Amin dreamed of opening a café, library and community space where children from a similar background could receive training, find work or sell their art and products. To help with his business plan, Russian For Fish developed a design for a traditional pitch-roofed structure that could be constructed in four parts, allowing the café to be extended over time. Although a suitable site was not found for the design to be built, we helped Amin locate a suitable location for a café in a former tyre shop near Mumbai airport and Bombay to Barcelona opened its doors in 2016.
