Farm Shop

East Sussex

2014

Russian for Fish were commissioned to design and build a 300sq m farm shop to replace an existing building. The asymmetric structure is a contemporary take on the traditional typology of a barn, with an off-centre peak to the roof that would lower the perceived height of the building from the roadside.

Except for large two-part trusses in European oak left exposed in the shop’s interior, all materials were sourced locally. Sweet chestnut timber from a nearby plantation was used for the vertical slats cladding the walls, with the exterior left untreated so that they develop a weathered look over time. Thanks to photovoltaic panelling on the roof to provide power to refrigerators and outlets, the shop is fully sustainable, and a layer of recycled glass-fibre insulation ensures the shop remains warm even at the height of winter.
