The Queen's Head
Southbank, London

The Queen’s Head was the response to ‘A Room for London’, a competition organised by Living Architecture and Artangel.  The scheme was submitted as STUDIO DA, the name under which RUSSIAN FOR FISH and Pierre d’Avoine Architects collaborate.

The proposal was beautifully simple: The Queen’s Head – a gold sovereign crowning The Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Our room for London was a glass ellipse placed on a circular gold plinth, bounded by pivoting gold and mirrored louvres, which held aloft a golden disc crowned with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.  The louvres would be friction pivoted and manually operated. They may have been positioned to provide panoramic views or to focus on a particular building such as St Paul’s Cathedral.
